April 2025

National Library Week is a time to celebrate the many ways libraries bring people together, spark imagination and support lifelong learning. Whatever draws you in, Scottsdale Public Library has something for everyone.

One patron shared, “We enjoy the beautiful buildings and frequently will just go to the libraries to sit and read or relax.” For another, the library became a lifeline: "During those uncertain early days of the pandemic…your library became my sanctuary. Even the practical amenities – like having reliable copy machines available for research materials – made such a difference in my writing process. These might seem like small things, but they demonstrate how vital public libraries are to creating and supporting local authors."

Stories like these highlight why we celebrate National Library Week. We hope you join us by visiting your favorite library branch and checking out what we have to offer.

(all ages) Celebrate Earth Month with a plant and seed swap! Bring seeds, plant starts or potted plants to trade with fellow gardening enthusiasts and Master Gardeners. We will also create biodegradable seed planters with Blue Zones Scottsdale.

(ages 18 and up) Add some whimsy to your décor by turning old teacups into charming mini gardens. Space is limited to 20 people; please see a staff person prior to the start of the program to pick up a ticket, which will be your registration.

(ages 6-11) Create your very own seed bombs and learn about growing plants using seeds from the library’s Seed Library.

(ages 12-18) Create an upcycled mini rug from reused fabric strips.

These programs are supported by funds from AZ Humanities, which supports public programs that promote understanding of the human experience.

The revolution in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has only just begun. What is the current state of AI and what does it mean for humanity?  Dr. Matthew Goodwin, explores the philosophical questions that AI raises, including ethical and privacy concerns.

During WWII a group of young Navajo men enlisted in the Marines unaware that they would develop a secret code against the Japanese military. Dr. Laura Tohe from ASU shares excerpts from live interviews with the Code Talkers telling their stories before, during and after the war that reflect their resiliency and service to the U.S.
